Traveling to Bangkok | My Bangkok Guide

Planninga trip to Bangkok? Look no further, here’s everything you need to know to plan your Bankgkok itinerary!

In the movie Hangover one guy says to the other, “Bangkok has him now.  I think that is exactly what happened to me. The city literally cast a spell over me; I was so excited the whole time I was there! Hello, overstimulation! Bangkok is so unique, loud, turbulent and exciting!

I never thought that I would ever fall in love with a city the way I did with Bangkok. Normally, I’m not a city person and could never live in Vienna. I’m a complete country girl! That’s why I was so amazed by the way I felt in Bangkok!

» Accommodations: Bangkok Hotels

If you want to read more about the hotels we stayed in in Bangkok, you can easily switch to another one of my posts. We spent 2 nights in each hotel and I can 100% recommend both of them. They’re very different hotels but you can read about them here to decide for yourself:

I also posted an article about the taxi, domestic flights, boat transfer and Skytrain. So, if you want to know more about how to travel in Bangkok and how to get from point A to point B, then make sure to read »this post!

» The city: What you have to see in Bangkok

To make sure this post doesn’t get too long, I’m trying to make it shorter! So, If you have any questions you can always ask me in a comment and I’ll try to answer with as much detail as possible.

  • Grand Palace & Smaragd Buddha Temple

This is an absolute must see! The attraction is crowded with tourists but definitely still recommendable. You can buy the tickets at the entrance and there’s not really that much of a wait.

IMPORTANT: There is a strict dress code at the Grand Palace. You have to cover your knees and your shoulders. I wore a long maxi dress with a thin jacket. You definitely have to wear the jacket and not just throw it over your shoulders. If you’re not wearing the right clothes, they will give you a long cloth to cover up at the entrance. You also have to take off your shoes when you enter the temple, which is why I suggest you to wear flip flops or comfy sandals that you can easily take off and on.

»Costs: 500 Bath per person – ca. 12,50 Euro
»Duration: 3-4 hours

  • Lumphini Park

This park is perfect to escape the buzz of the city and enjoying some quiet hours. There are a lot of merchants with water, fruit and other delicious treats. Also the park is so pretty and you can definitely spend a great time there.

IMPORTANT: There are many monitor lizards near the pond in the park! I loved watching these amazing creatures. However, it’s important to stay cautious and don’t try to touch them. They are extremely dangerous! There have already been some crazy tourists that went too near them and got seriously hurt!

  • MBK Shopping Mall

If you want to see a typical shopping mall, you should not miss the MBK (Mah Boon Krong Center.) Be careful, though! It is extremely big, crowded and confusing. There are countless shops; I literally have never seen anything like it before. It’s so easy to lose track of everything! There’s so much to see and buy. There’s literally nothing you won’t find here! Here you can read more about the MBK Center! However, we did really enjoy being there and we bought a lot of stuff at the shopping mall. The Asian Dunkin’ Donut fake was so delicious.

  • Boat tour through the canal Khlong Saen Saep and across the river Chao Phraya

There’s no cheaper, faster and more exciting way to travel through Bangkok. We bought a ticket for the big river at the Khlong Saen Saep canal for 8(!) Bath – that’s about 20 cents!!

Afterwards, we bought a One-Way ticket for the river Chaeo Phraya for about 40 Baht per person (1 Euro.) With the ticket, we almost traveled along the whole river. The price is just insane, isn’t it? Of course, you can exit the boat at every stop and leave as you like. We, however, decided to do the whole tour and go back to our hotel with a taxi.

  • TukTuk

You’ll find TukTuk’s at every corner in Thailand. It is a very cheap and fun way to travel through the city, and not only in Bangkok! It’s definitely something you have to do when you’re travelling throughout the country.

  • Eating at the market or on the streets

This is an absolute must on every Bangkok trip: eating at a cookshop. They have the most delicious noodle soups, curries and chicken. That is why Manuel and I love Thailand so much – the incredibly delicious food!! You definitely have to try these street kitchens. We often ate there and not got sick once. Don’t be shy, try it! On the islands there are also various merchants for fruit shakes, crèmes, thai pancakes and many more sweet treats. You have to try that too! SO YUMMY.

» The cityWhat you do not have to do in Bangkok

Of course, there are also many things that are way too overhyped and do not need to be done in Bangkok. They are solely tourist traps and I would not recommend going there.

  • Floating Markets

A few people on Instagram told me about the market being a tourist trap, which is why we didn’t even go there. However, when we were near the market once and realized that the people were absolutely right – it was way too overcrowded. What a pity! A few years ago, the market was supposed to be a really cool thing.

  • Patpong – „Red light district n Bangkok“

We did not even want to go there but our taxi driver somehow took a detour. So, we saw the Patpong district with its many gogo-bars. Patpong is a side alley of the Silom Road! In the afternoon/early evening, there are many merchants with fake bags, watches and clothes. The district isn’t that dangerous but I would be overly cautious, as it usually is super crowded. It seemed to be more like a market than red light district in my opinion.

I hope my recommendations for Bangkok were helpful and interesting for you. I absolutely fell in love with this city and will definitely be back! If you want to read more about Thailand you can click HERE for my posts from 2014
