Plan Your Trip: My Step by Step Instructions

Planning your trip is not easy!I was asked a couple of times how I plan my trips from beginning to end. From the idea, to the trip itself, to departing. I want to summarize this for you in this blogpost. I hope this post is helpful even though it’s very long. I also linked a lot of helpful posts for you below. I thinks if you plan a trip, you should take a look at these posts. If you have further questions, contact me.

You should know beforehand that the process of planning my trip takes a lot of time. I’m a control freak and I want to check everything to maybe find a cheaper alternative. And that can take long – but it is really fun and you’ll always know about the newest offers.

Step by Step Guide to Your Perfect Trip

» 1. The Destination  Where to go??

You have to choose a destination. The first step is so hard because I’ve got a lot of destinations on my travel bucket list. After deciding on my first destination, I check on the best travel times, the climate, and holidays for this destination.

I let myself get inspired via Instagram, the newest travel trends or where other travel bloggers are visiting. You can find so many inspiration resources. You can also get a catalogue from your travel agent and read through it for inspiration. To make your research easier, I linked some helpful blogposts below.

» 2. Search for Flights Affordable but Acceptable Options

This is the difficult part! Once I’ve decided on a destination, I start searching for a cheap flight. It’s not only hard, it also takes very long. I like using Skyscanner or On-the-Fly. The hardest part is to find a flight which is cheap and where you won’t have so many stop-overs. For a long flight, I prefer flying at night. You won’t find this easily, which means you need to be patient. I linked my blog posts about this topic below. Take a look at them. It’s best to book 4-5 Months ahead and book 3-4 months prior.

YOU WON’T MISS AN OFFER LIKE THIS

In my “Flight-Search“ archive, you will find helpful tips I like to use myself. If you want to find a cheap flight, it can take some time. Another tip, try searching for error fares in the internet. These flights are incredibly cheap. You can search for error fares on special websites, in which you can subscribe to a newsletter or submit your phone number. There will be an alert and you can book the flight. The corporations will see their mistake and will change it soon. Every trip that was booked will be cancelled, which is why you will need luck. I always try again and hope that I’m lucky.

» 3. Search for your lodging  Resort, Hotel, Apartment, Hostel…

If I found a cheap and good connection, I’ll book it. Afterwards, I’ll search for a hotel. It never happened to me that I didn’t find a place to stay. I don’t know anyone that books the hotel first and the flight afterwards. Maybe you can book the flight first or book a package holiday where everything is included. Back to the hotel. Depending on what kind of traveller you are, it is time to find a place to stay. I use Booking, Holidaycheck, and other travel portals or hotel groups to find nice hotels. If you already booked the flight, you’ll also know how long you’d want to stay. Also take a look at the hotel websites, because the prices may be cheaper.

If you’re a blogger or journalist, you can also write an e-mail to the hotel and ask if they’re interested in a cooperation. A lot of hotels are happy about these requests and take on the request “Free lodging for online advertising.“ If you want to do this, it is your decision. I was already invited to a couple of great hotels. If you can’t benefit from this, I can recommend having an account on Booking.com – I already got great offers. If you can remember – my last Thailand holiday. We booked the Haad Tien (but we were really disappointed – here’s my blogpost) for 60% less the normal price. We saved a lot of money! We were able to save 45% when booking our room for Rome! Register to get more discounts.

» 4. Choose your Itinerary Sightseeing, Nature, Restaurants, Shops, etc

So far, so good. We overcame the most time-consuming steps with booking the hotel and flight. Afterwards, it’s easy. I Google what to find nearby. Icheck Instagram for pictures. This is how you can see how it really looks there. If I find something on Instagram, I check the person’s profile to see if I can find other activities. Instagram is a great research method for restaurants. No app or website is as good as Instagram. You can see how the food at a restaurant really looks. If we plan a little shopping trip, I also use Instagram or Google. If you travel to a city and try to find nice sights like the colloseum, the Vatican, the Sagrada Família and so on, you should get tickets ahead – it will save a lot of time.

» 5. Anticipation ist he Greatest Joy  Lean Back and Count Down

For me as a blogger there are these steps:

  • Prepare blog posts and social media posts
  • Plan outfits for the holiday
  • Prepare camera equipment
  • ……

Yeah, you know, I could prolong this list, but since it’s only about planning a trip – just wait for your trip. Then, you have to pack your bags. I already posted a lot of blog posts about this. Check them out. I’ve got luggage packing lists and travel pharmacies.
