You saved enough money to book your holiday and you’re really look forward to it! I know the feeling!. But after booking, there’s not much left of your savings! So, you think about your budget before even going on your trip! You know what? You don’t have to! In this post, you can read about how to save money while you’re on your holiday and still have a great time!
Saving Money on Holiday – The Best Tips
» Transportation: Don’t Take a Cab, Use Cheaper Methods of Transportation
Before starting your trip, check if there is a cheaper way from the airport to your hotel or into the city. There are trains that you can take into the city center very often. In London, there is the Heathrow Express. In Vienna, there is the Cat. In Amsterdam, we took the train instead of a cab to save money. .
» Breakfast: Eat Enough to Skip Lunch
Normally, you can book breakfast at your hotel. Most breakfast buffets offer a large breakfast spread. I love to wake up early and enjoy a largebreakfast. If I eat a big breakfast, I usually won’t need lunch, just a little something for dinner. Use breakfast to save on lunch. Take some fruit or a croissant with you.
» Currency: Research Exchange Rates
If you travel to a country where you need to pay with another currency, you should think about exchanging money first. Not every bank has enough foreign currencies and has to order them from bigger banks. That will cost extra. It doesn’t really make sense to exchange money in cash. You can also go to the ATM in your destination and withdraw some money there. I prefer to not have too much cash on me, because I’m scared of thiefs.
» Local Favorites: If you see locals around, it’s not only cheap, but also yummy!
If you’re looking for a restaurant for a wonderful evening with yummy food, choose a restaurant where you see a lot of locals sitting. You can be sure that the food is delicious and cheap. In Santorini we visited a lot of wonderful old and rustic tavernas. It was much cheaper than the normal tourist restaurants in the middle of Oia. You can save a lot of money doing this.
» Souveniers: Don’t Buy Them!
I think I got this from my mother – she never liked it when I brought home a lot of junk after traveling. I broke that habit quickly. Instead of buying expensive junk, I take sand, seashells, or something else from the beach. When I’m home, I’m use this to decorate glasses and give them away. It’s selfmade, pretty and really cheap.
» Lodging & Flight: Research Saves Money
You can save tons on money when searching for your hotel. If I book a trip, it’s really stressful. I’m sitting there doing my research for hours (days and weeks). It takes a lot of time, but it’s always worth it. I already booked a flight for next year that normally costs 350-400 Euro (where to is still a surprise), but after searching for a long time, I booked for 160 Euro. Amazing, right? Waiting was worth it .
» Drinks: Forget Alcohol and Other Expensive Drinks
I know I sound like a kill joy, but since I only drink water, I notice this a lot. I never liked softdrinks, not even as a child. That’s where you can see the price difference. I drink minera lwater and it’s much cheaper than Cola, Fanta, Pepsi and all the other soft drinks or alcohol. I’m not a big fan of these drinks, so I don’t spend a lot of money. A little tip though: If you like to drink wine, order the house wine. On Santorini, we met a German couple that told us about the Greek housewine. It’s usually cheaper.
» Snacks: Don’t Buy Anthing From Expensive Hotel Shops
Last but not least (I could list so many things), the sweets trap. The prices in the hotel shops are really extreme. Sometimes, you might need something and there is nowhere to go besides the hotelshop. But if you know that you need some sweets after lunch, you should take something with you from home (for me it’s nutella) or buy something from the supermarket and take it with you to the hotel.:-)
